1977: British F1 Team and Tyrrell
Kagan's Formula One debut was at the 1977 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, for the British F1 Team. Despite failing to pre-qualify for the race, Kagan's outstanding drive later in the weekend won him the non-championship Tony Brise Memorial Trophy after starting in 2nd place, behind polesitter John Watson in the Shadow.
This result helped Kagan to sign a contract with Tyrrell team from the next race in Zandvoort, after Tyrrell fired Mexican driver Héctor Rebaque.
