This award began in 1946, after the death of Canadian driver George Robson and the inauguration of the race in his memory. In order to win this award, the driver must not have taken part in either the Jimmy Bryan, Tony Bettenhausen, Bobby Ball, George Robson or Ted Horn Memorial races, and must maintain a clean sheet in the season, during the years between 1946-1984. However, the Rex Mays Classic does not apply to these regulations. Any driver who wins the memorial races and not the Clean Cup will have caught the 'Robson curse'.
Robson, one of the eponymous drivers, won the first award posthumously. The last winner of the yearly award was Roger McCluskey as from 1972, the M-word was dropped from all races in the series. However, it was reintroduced in 1978 after the word popped up again. Notable drivers like Johnnie Rutherford and Gary Bettenhausen fell victim to the Robson curse as Rick Mears won the last of the Indy Clean Cups in 1983-84.
However, Rutherford and Bettenhausen among others won clean races later and were freed from the curse.
