Upgrades

Four times in the year (before Australia, Spain, Great Britain and Italy) each team will have the opportunity to install upgrades on their vehicles. Only one parameter may be upgraded each time, aside from pit stops which you can do every time. I'm going to keep this pretty simple here, so the following upgrades are possible:

  • Reliability
  • Race Pace
  • Qualifying Pace
  • Tyre Life
  • Pit stops (free)

When you have decided on which upgrade you would prefer, you can then choose how radical or conservative you would like it to be:

  • Very conservative - very high chance of success, very small gains
  • Conservative - high chance of success, small gains
  • Standard - average chance of success, average gains
  • Radical - low chance of success, high gains
  • Very radical - very low chance of success, very high gains

Success or failure will be decided by RNG. Note that a bad failure may actually have the opposite effect to what you were hoping for, so choose carefully. Teams will also be advised of the degree of success or failure.

For example, Red Bull may wish to attempt to improve their tyre life. They don't feel they should be taking risks early in the season, so are opting for a conservative approach. As all teams can attempt to improve pit stops for free, they would also like to do this, and are going to take a radical approach to try and get ahead of the other teams on pit road.

UPDATE FROM 2014 SEASON ONWARDS

Teams may now use a "Joker card" once per season when performing an upgrade. The joker upgrade is almost guaranteed to succeed and therefore teams can go for a radical upgrade with less fear of failure.
