Rudolf Caracciola

Otto Wilhelm Rudolf "Rudi" Caracciola (born 30 January 1901 in Remagen, died 28 September 1959 in Kassel) was a German racing driver. Widely considered one of the greatest Grand Prix drivers of all time, he won three AIACR European Championships and six German Grands Prix as the leading member of the Silver Arrows Mercedes-Benz team. Never a member of the Nazi Party, Caracciola remained popular after the War, selling cars to NATO soldiers in occupied Europe. He attempted to return to motorsport three times, first in the 1946 Indianapolis 500, crashing in practice, then in the 1951 German Grand Prix, in which he finished last, and finally in a sportscar race in Bremgarten in 1952, where he injured his leg. He died of liver failure at the age of 58.
