Marc Surer (born 18th September 1951 in Arisdorf, Switzerland) is a Formula One driver who drove for Interscope in 1979.
Before Formula One
Marc Surer did not begin his racing career until his 20s due to the ban on motorsport in Switzerland since the 1955 Le Mans Disaster. After moving to Germany in 1974, he would graduate to European Formula Three as a member of the BMW Junior Team with Eddie Cheever and Manfred Winkelhock. In his first full season in the European Formula Two Championship, he finished as the runner-up behind Bruno Giacomelli despite not winning a single race (he did, however, manage six second-places in twelve rounds, at Thruxton, Hockenheim, Mugello, Nogaro, Misano and Hockenheim again). In 1979, Surer turned down an offer to remain at the BMW team as a championship favourite, instead choosing to graduate to Formula One.
Formula One Career
1979 : Interscope
Surer's first taste of Formula One came in 1979 with the troubled Interscope Racing outfit. He took the team's second seat alongside established driver Danny Ongais. Despite Surer's immediate pace, the team desperately struggled to make it out of prequalifying. The lone exception to that came at Kyalami, where Surer and Ongais both managed to make the grid, with Surer coming home in 16th place for his first Formula One race finish. He would later add to that an 11th place at the non-championship International Trophy, and a highly impressive second-place in the 1979 Tony Brise Memorial Trophy. Those results would help him to move up the grid for 1980.
1980- : ATS
Surer would sign for the ATS outfit for 1980.
