Bernard Charles "Bernie" Ecclestone (born 28 October 1930 in Bungay) is a British business magnate. Beginning his career as a garage owner and racing driver, he got involved in Formula One when he was hired as a driver for Mercedes in 1954. When the team pulled out of the sport, Ecclestone purchased the team's assets and became a team owner, entering races on and off and buying and selling used chassis. He later turned to driver management, before steadily increasing his influence in the sport from the 1970s. Building his business empire, he would become the de facto head of Formula One.
