Astrid Abrahamsen (born July 20, 1970) is a Norwegian Formula 1 driver born in Oslo, Norway. She is currently competing in the 1990 Formula One season for Life, and she is well known for winning in her first ever start in Formula 1, the 1990 Monaco Grand Prix.

Earlier career

Abrahamsen started racing at karts in the age of 8. After years of ranking up and eventually winning the Kart World Championship, she moved onto Formula 3000 with FIRST. Despite being quite fast and getting a win in the Birmingham Superprix, everything else wasn't good, and she finished 11th in the standings, with 10 points in her hand. However, she received an offer from Team LeMans for their Japanese F3000 team next year, when she finally found sucess, winning 2 events and finishing 5th in the standings with 21 points. Moreover, she had also received an offer to race in Grand Prix motorcycling, and, despite some inconsistency, she managed to finish 5th, with 140 points. During the earlier part of 1989, she spent some time testing the FIRST Racing car that they were going to enter in F1, with their entry ultimately withdrawing because of a lack of funds. However, she eventually managed to get a seat in F1.

Formula 1

1990 - Life

Abrahamsen finally made her debut at Life Racing Engines. However, in the first three races, the Life was plagued with power issues, coming from the in-house engine, which was said to be bulky, heavy and unreliable. However, that all changed in Monaco, when manager Ernesto Vita upgraded his design and landed a deal with the more convenient and proven Judd EV engines. She managed to get through pre-qualifying and the first qualifying just barely, but in a very heavy upset, due to the heavy rain during the second qualifying, she was able to bring the unlikely Life into pole, furthermore she converted the pole into a win. However, only half-points were rewarded, due to the fact that only 50% of race distance was completed. Despite this, in Canada she was unable to qualify. In Mexico, she was able to qualify and score 6th, holding off championship contender Nelson Piquet. After Mexico she is positioned 8th in the championship.
