Team Mugen defended their teams' championship from 2020, while the drivers' champion, Valtteri Bottas moved back to Formula One to drive for Toyota.
The series organizers announced yet another calendar expansion, this time to 10 races as Suzuka's East Course was added back for the first time since 2002 as well as a second race at Fuji.
Ukyo Sasahara, driving the #15 entry for Red Bull Mugen Team Goh won the championship, the team's first since Naoki Yamamoto two years prior. He won by 24 points from Mitch Evans, the series' polesetter with 4 pole positions, for whom it is his second runner-up placing in succession. Team KCMG won the teams' championship from two-time defending winners Mugen by two points. Felix Rosenqvist, who had been leading the championship at the halfway stage, only scored a single point in the last six races and dropped to fifth place overall.
