Winkelhock followed in his brother Joachim's footsteps when he joined the World Touring Car Masters series in 1990 as a mid-season replacement for the injured Nettan Lindgren-Jansson at the Volker Schmidt Racing BMW team. He failed to qualify on several occasions but he was able to finish fourth in class in the Bathurst 1000.
