Baldi became one of the first drivers to commit to the brand new World Touring Car Masters in 1988, entering an independent BMW M3 for the Euromotor International team alongside Swiss driver Mario Hytten. Despite only winning a single race in 1988, Baldi's consistency saw him finish a distant second in the C Class to Mercedes' Roland Asch - beating all of the works BMW drivers.
His performances earned him a drive with Mercedes the following year, with Asch moving to the works Ford team. Baldi would not fare quite as well in this year, with the BMW seemingly equal to the Mercedes in 1989 - meaning there were more winners in their class. Baldi would finish the season in fifth in class, the second best of the Mercedes.
