After a fairly successful 1989 season in Formula 3000 where he took a fifth place overall with 3 podiums and a pole position, McNish moved to Eddie Jordan Racing for 1990. Eventually this became a test driver seat for the Jordan Formula One team in 1991 and after regular driver Bertrand Gachot was sentenced to a London prison for an incident, McNish made his debut at that year's Belgian Grand Prix.
