The 1988 Italian Formula One Championship was the first season of the of Italian Formula One Championship, established by the organisers of the Bologna Motor Show to add prestige to their F1 Indoor Trophy as well as to bring greater recognition to the accomplishments of Italian teams in Formula One. Ferrari entered the season as the overwhelming favourites to take both Championships, owing to their opposition's status as "backmarker" teams. They would live up to those expectations as eventual Drivers Champion Gerhard Berger won every race he finished, which was also enough to secure the Constructors Championship for Ferrari beyond any doubt. The season would see eleven different drivers compete for seven different teams.

Calendar
As would become customary, the Italian Championship calendar comprised four "core" events, as well as two other European Grands Prix that would be selected before the start of the season. The four core events were the San Marino Grand Prix, held in Imola; the Italian Grand Prix, held in Monza; the Indoor Trophy, held in Bologna, and the Mondaco Grand Prix which (although not held in Italy) was held within ten kilometres of the Italian border. For the 1988 season, the two remaining events were announced to be the Belgian and Spanish Grands Prix.
Championship Standings
Championship points are awarded to the top four cars at each event. Constructors earn the points for their best car at any given event.
