[[Jody Scheckter]] held on in an exhilarating move around the outside at Tamburello to take the lead from pole-sitter [[Patrick Depailler]], and [[Gilles Villeneuve]] and [[Elio de Angelis]] swapped places, but with 10 laps to go the final order looked to be set. However, chaos would soon erupt. Patrick Depailler suffered a puncture with 2 laps to go, dropping him down to fifth. Then, de Angelis would spin and Villeneuve encountered mechanical failure on the last lap of the race.
