Ruthless defending against a superior opponent may just earn you a point in F1.

Some people just never learn, do they? After Jules Bianchi managed to successfully fight off Pastor Maldonado for his second pole position of the season, people were already hoping for another non-Caterham victory. Daniil Kvyat brought a swift end to these dreams by securing the lead with an impressive start, building the foundation for a controlling victory, his sixth of the season.

Of course any dreams of success for Maldonado were undone by himself, in cooperation with Daniel Ricciardo. The two had a disagreeement running into each other in turn 1 a few laps into the Grand Prix. Whilst race control considered the incident a 50-50 one, both drivers were quite vocal towards giving the other driver the lion share of the blame. Regardless, both men had to work their way back up the order.

Whilst Maldonado did an awful job with that, Ricciardo was going well, until he ran into one opponent he could not bully into submission: IndyCar champion Miccoli. He had brought himself into a good position with his DGN and refused to yield. His superior engine power allowed him to prevent Ricciardo from using any slipstream-based chances and his brutal, but fair, defending sealed the deal.

Miccoli was not the only driver that scored a points finish today: Ármannsson managed to keep Vettel behind for most of the final stint, only to lose second to him, and earned a good podium finish that way. Dave Cassidy was able to make use of the abovementioned incident and Pagenaud’s silly driver error to get six points and close the gap from Sauber to Williams with only two races to go.
