Report:

Ricciardo's start was amazing, but his lead only lasted a few laps.

An old saying was proven true at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, as Sebastian Vettel scores yet another win for himself and his Caterham team: you cannot win a race on the first corner. If you could, Daniel Ricciardo would have scored Mahindra’s first win. A breathtaking start by the Australian left the Caterhams, who started 1-2, to eat dust. Both Vettel and Kvyat suffered off the line.

However, Sebastian was ready to strike back and went about it with a cool and rational strategy, quickly erasing the lead before making use of the supreme Judd engine to take the lead back from Ricciardo. This was the beginning of the end for Mahindra-Mercedes: their hopes of challening for a podium died as quickly as Daniel’s Avon Tyres, the Australian dropping down the order afterwards.

A great middle stint enabled Ricciardo to at least be fourth after the final period of stops. With the right attitude, he managed to fight off Nathan McKane for fourth place, securing himself another 12 points. McKane must be disappointed, especially given as his teammate made the most of his chances and went on to finish the race in second position, only a bit less than five seconds of Vettel’s supreme pace.

Mahindra’s rookie apparentely is struggling to deal with the upgrades that were developed in accordance to Ricciardo’s feedback: he is pretty much nowhere in comparison to his teammate and eliminated himself when he failed to heed his race engineer’s warning about Rosberg retiring his car in the Parabolica. He is not the only American to make errors, both Haas cars inspired their drivers to be stupid and throw them away, leading to a double DNF.
