Duke Nalon

Dennis C. "Duke" Nalon (born 2 March 1913 in Chicago, died 26 February 2001) was an American racing driver who competed in the AAA National Championship from 1935 to 1954. Particularly quick when qualifying at Indianapolis, where he scored pole twice, he never won a AAA race, but scored six podiums in 34 starts and finished fifth in the championship in 1948. Nalon is best remembered for a fiery accident in the 1949 Indianapolis 500 which he survived by holding his breath and jumping from the car while it was still moving. Two of Nalon's 11 Indianapolis starts came while the race was part of the Formula One championship. In 1950, he drove for Motorsport Bleu and took the Talbot-Lago to 18th place. The next year, he started on the front row for Robert William Racing Team, but retired after 103 laps.
