Gurney made his non-championship Formula One debut for Rob Walker Racing in that year's Glover Trophy, qualifying in 4th place ahead of drivers such as Troy Ruttman, Graham Hill or Consalvo Sanesi. Gurney however retired after a handful of laps with an oil leak failure. He also took part in a handful of championship races for Rob Walker that year as well as the British Grand Prix driving for JB Naylor. While Gurney showed some good driving behind the wheel, bad luck always got him as he retired from the first two races he competed in.
