Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman (born 19 May 1928 in Richmond, died 16 December 1982 in Norwich) was a British automotive design engineer best known for founding Team Lotus. Also a driver himself in his youth, Chapman's first F1 attempt was as a driver at the 1955 Singapore Grand Prix. When he brought Team Lotus to Formula One in 1956 with the Lotus 10, he took on his usual managerial and engineering role. However, upon the death of driver Dries van der Lof, he took over driving duties for three races. Although he proved quick, finishes were not forthcoming and when Chapman was injured in an accident during the tragic 1956 Scottish Grand Prix, he retired from driving.

Lotus pulled out of F1 after 1956 to focus on designing the Lotus 12, and returned in 1958. Under Chapman's leadership, Lotus won the drivers' and constructors' titles in 1977. Chapman subsequently became involved with the controversial DeLorean project, that collapsed following John DeLorean's arrest for cocaine smuggling. Accusations were levied at Lotus for tax fraud amounting to millions of pounds, and while those were found to be true, Colin Chapman had died of a heart attack before the evidence had come to light. He was 54 years old.
