Race Report

Pre-Race

John Zimmer was unable to compete in the race after spraining his leg in the previous race. NAB-HRT did not have time to announce a replacement during the one-week layover and only ran Frank Zimmer at Shanghai.

Qualifying

Pre-qualifying was uneventful with race-winners Aurelien Moll and Simon Redman being the only notable knockouts. In qualifying proper, Frank Zimmer suffered an enormous accident after a brake failure, hitting the wall at 250 km/h. Zimmer was alright after the major accident and he was able to start the race on Sunday. Gary Cameron put his Calinetic on pole for the second time in 2011 with Hagane Shizuka putting his MAN alongside him. Nathanael Spencer and Daniel Melrose followed in third and fourth. David Koczo started in fifth.

Race

The race was won after only three laps. Prospec decided to bring in David Koczo on Lap 3 and he was able to romp away, winning by over a minute. Prospec was later criticized for not putting Spencer on the same strategy as he was contending for the championship. With Koczo leading, Melrose and Spencer battled for third and fourth but they were both passed by Dave Simpson who was the second to stop on Lap 14. Gary Cameron squandered his pole position, dropping back after only four laps.

After the stops were completed, the only battle on the track was between Melrose, Spencer, Simpson and Shizuka. Melrose and Spencer both came in at the same time and came out with Simpson and Shizuka just in front. However, just like the last race, Spencer once again got the better of Melrose. Simpson and Shizuka continued to battle for second but it all ended up in tears on Lap 25. Shizuka and Simpson collided at the first corner, letting Spencer and Melrose through.

In the end, Koczo led home a Prospec 1-2 with Melrose third and Kay Lon fourth. Pippa Mann, James Davies, Gary Cameron and Thomas De Bock rounded out the points. Melrose recorded the fastest lap of the race. With one race to go, Spencer and Melrose were only separated by six points. However, Prospec's 1-2 clinched them the Constructors' Championship for the second year in a row.
