Charles Van Acker
Charles Van Acker (born 14 March 1912 in Brussels, died 31 May 1998 in South Bend, Indiana) was a Belgian-American racing driver. Born in Belgium, he settled in the United States where he became a racing driver. From 1946 to 1951, he started 27 races in the AAA Championship, scoring 5 podiums and winning two races at Winchester in 1946 and Milwaukee in 1947, finishing fourth in the 1947 championship. After a disappointing season in 1949, his career was revived in 1950 when the Indianapolis 500 gained World Championship status. Ecurie Nationale Belge wanted a Belgian driver with local experience, and Van Acker was promptly hired. He qualified 9th and finished 11th in that race, prompting a contract renewal for 1951, when he started 11th and finished 5th. That would be his last Indianapolis 500, but he later competed in other Formula 1 races for the team, including the 1951 Belgian Grand Prix and the 1952 United States Grand Prix.
