Alexey Pchelintsev was born to a wealthy Kazakh family in the city of Almaty (then Alma-Ata), the largest city in Kazakhstan. Pchelintsev lived in Kazakhstan until 1991 when his family emigrated to Japan for business reasons. Alexey's father, a financial advisor, had no interest in motor racing but Alexey was fascinated by motor racing. Pchelintsev joined the Japanese karting circuit at age thirteen. Pchelintsev did quite well in the lower feeder categories in Japan and he was signed on to the Team Nakajima squad, run by Satoru Nakajima. Nakajima's conncetions gave Pchelintsev, who won three races in his first season in Formula 3, a spot on the Honda Young Drivers' Program by 2001. In 2003, Pchelintsev was given a drive in Formula Nippon.
