History
In 1979, FISA brought about considerable changes to the sport, including increased safety measures and more circuits. A new team arrived in the form of Jenkins, as well as many new drivers, including Indy 500 winner Roberto Horford, European F2 champion Edward Kevin, French F3 champion Guillaume Gauthier and World Sportscar champion Thomas Nurmester.
1979
The season itself proved to be very exciting, with the 17 races won by ten different drivers and six different constructors. With a few races to go, Jacques Laffite, René Arnoux and Edward Kevin had established themselves as the leading group, which they would remain until the end of the year. With the top three positions regularly changing hands, the championship went down to the wire. Before the season-ending Australian Grand Prix, Kevin had a one-point lead over Arnoux, and two over Laffite.
In a thrilling finale, René Arnoux crashed out after 21 laps and Kevin was taken out of the running in the race-stopping accident on lap 47, handing the championship to Laffite, who finished second and scored four points, just enough to win by two points.
1980
The next season, the Ligier had lost its winning pace, and Laffite and Kevin had to resort to minor points, while Arnoux had signed for the unreliable Ferrari team. This left Lotus, Williams and Brabham as the frontrunners, with Alan Jones and Sammy Jones leading the championship after the thrilling Monaco Grand Prix, which notably saw Thomas Nurmester score the first points for the young Osella team.
