Manfred Winkelhock (born 6 October 1951) is a German driver best known for his appearances in Formula One.
Formula One
1982: ATS and Lotus
Winkelhock was signed to underfunded German team ATS for the 1982 season partnering Rene Arnoux. While the team was able to successfully pre-qualify in most of their attempts, the car proved to be uncompetitive in main qualifying and in the race, with both cars being seen at the back of the grid. In his 7 attempts, Winkelhock managed to post a best finish of 11th at the United States Grand Prix West. After the Mexican Grand Prix, a management change at ATS saw both Winkelhock and Arnoux dropped from the team. With drivers Raul Boesel and Eliseo Salazar replacing both respectively.
After sitting out the next two Grand Prix (Detroit and France), Lotus, which also went through a management change, were looking to swap from their uncompetitive naturally aspirated Ford engines, hired Winkelhock to replace Desire Wilson from the British Grand Prix onwards partnering Nigel Mansell. A move that allowed Lotus to acquire turbocharged engines from BMW, due to Winkelhock's previous connections with the German manufacturer.
Winkelhock's first race with the British outfit saw the team dominate pre-qualifying. He would go on to qualify 18th and finished P12. A DNF followed at Germany before he was involved in a controversial incident at the Austrian Grand Prix which saw him collide with Spartec driver Robert Kagan as Winkelhock was coming into the pits to fix a loose wheel. The incident resulted in Kagan being injured and although Winkelhock would continue on to finish P10, his best finish of the year, he would be disqualified (later reinstated), suspended for the following race and Lotus fined £100,000 (later turned into a personal fine for Winkelhock.) He would be replaced by fellow BMW backed driver Stefan Bellof.
