2013 Formula One Rejects Microprose Grand Prix Series season

From Formula Rejects Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

The third season of the Formula One Rejects Microprose Grand Prix Series was held in 2013, on the same circuits as the 1991 Formula One season, although with the Mexican Grand Prix moved to the second race of the season, to save on travel costs. The reigning Drivers' Champion was HWNSNBM, who retired unbeaten from the series at the end of 2012, and the reigning Constructors' Champions were Viking Racing.

Entrants

The field consisted of 20 teams, all entering two cars.

Team and engine changes

  • Driot-Arnoux Motorsport (DAMS) joined the series as a new team. No teams dropped out after the 2012 season.
  • Cosworth left the series after the end of the 2012 season.
  • Five new engine suppliers joined the series for the 2013 season. Isuzu, Neotech and HKS supplied 3.5l V12 engines to Simtek, EuroBrun and Monteverdi respectively. ATS Rial changed to a Volkswagen VR6 engine on a non-works basis, tuned in-house and fitted with a supercharger and turbocharger by the team. Fondmetal Team Malaysia lost their Renault V8 engine to DAMS and took on a supply of triple-turbocharged W9 engines originally conceived back in the mists of time by Renault, developed by Mecachrome, then bought and rebadged by Proton.
  • Mastercard Lola, the only team to lose their Cosworth engine and not make an engine deal with a new supplier, used the Dodge engines discarded by Monteverdi, no longer rebadged as Chryslers.
  • Forti Corse added a turbocharger to their Ford do Brasil inline-4 engine.
  • Toyota increased the size of the engine supplied to Stefan Grand Prix from a 2.4l V8 to a 3.0l V12.
  • The F1 Rejects team officially changed their name to Formula One Rejects Motorsport. Their new acronym (F1RM) in conjunction to their previous success and inherent links to the series itself saw them nicknamed "The Firm". They also gained the sponsorship from Scunthorpe United F.C. that had been prominent on last year's Toleman cars. Toleman found new sponsorship from Guinness and are now known as Guinness Team Toleman.

Driver changes

Numbering anomaly

With no defending Drivers' Champion, the Series Management refused to issue the number 1 and also disallowed the use of the number 0 - hence Viking Racing, as Constructors' Champions, took numbers 2 and 3, and further teams followed in sequence, resulting in the bizarre absence of car 10 due to Simtek having already banked numbers 11 and 12 to match their 1995 car in Formula One.

Entry List

Note: "All" in the "Rounds" column refers to all the rounds that have taken place in the championship so far. Driver changes mid-season are, however, unlikely.

Fondmetal Team Malaysia's plans to use the Lotus T127 from the 2010 F1 season, in an attempt to beat the other teams who would still be running what appeared to be a GP2 car, were suddenly thwarted when someone posing as a potential new employee at the team managed to steal the blueprints. This turned out to be HWNSNBM, who sold the blueprints to Sir Bernard Shekelslike, who in turn sold them on again to the other teams, thus ensuring another F1RMGP season in which the cars all looked strangely alike.
