Petrus Handoyo (born 30th March, 1975 in Jakarta, Indonesia) is a racing driver with Indonesian nationality. He has driven in many series including Life Grand Prix Series, Rejects-1 World Championship, AltCART, and some F1 drives. His son, Matius Handoyo is also a racing driver.

Early Life

Petrus Handoyo was born in 1975 in a motorsport-fan family in Jakarta, Indonesia. Altough he had driven karts quite often, it was not until the age of ten he took motorsport career seriously. He drived in some kart championships in Autralia, finishing best 5th in 1989. First time he drive on an international race was 1990 Australian Drivers Championship, at a young age of just 15 years old. He managed to secured 8th place in the championship, with one victory, beating Mark McLaughin by 0.003 seconds. This success let him secure a drive for 1991 in Japanese Formula 3. He finished 9th in the championship, without win with 2 podiums. For 1992 he moved to Europe, competing in some F3 races and some F3000 races. None of them are full season so he finished quite low in the championship. He took 3rd place in Pau F3000 round.

Life Grand Prix

Handoyo secured a long-time partnership with a Canadian team Caraxl Racing, one of major factor why is because one of it's founder is Indonesian. Handoyo helped the team develop the car in testing while also doing some F3000 race. His first chance for race came in Mondello after James Generic was injured. Handoyo qualified 28th, and saves his car in the last 2 cars running until himself got a brake failure, hitting the dangerous dirt enbankments at Turn 3, resulting himself an injury for two months. This does not lessen his ambition in racing. Back for Austrian to French round, he failed to finish all races. Final chance of the year came on the race at Nusantara area (Malaysia and Indonesia). After retiring in Malaysia, Handoyo finished 5th in home soil, boosting both popularity his and skill.

Personal Life

Handoyo married to Sandra Elias, and had two children, Matius and Triana. Matius is the one who followed his father's footsteps.

Handoyo has a unique helmet. The helmet has a batik pattern, and coloured in a four-way symmetrical way of blue, yellow, green, and red. He once asked why his helmet looks like that, his answer was: "My country is a very diversed country in terms of everything. Batik represents one of the most important heritage, while the colours represents the unity of our culture and people."
