The 1977 Elite Racing League season was the 18th season of the FIA's Formula One motor racing support series (the series would remain a support series until 1997.) The Drivers Championship was won by Formula 1 champion, Emerson Fittipaldi whilst his team that he was driving for, McLaren, also won the Constructors Championship, like in 1976 the titles were decided in Argentina which was the penultimate race.
This season also saw a pretty big shake up in the ERL, this would be the biggest until the 1980 regulation changes.

Teams and Drivers
Honda along with Chris Amon both withdrew from the championship at the end of 1976 due to other commitments, Honda would later return to partner McLaren and then re-enter its factory team from 2005.
This was BRM's last season in both Formula 1 and the Elite Racing League.
This was Ronnie Peterson's last season in the championship due to him wanting to commit to Formula 1.
Renault debuted in this season thanks to Jacques Laffite persuading the team owners to takeover the vacant Honda spot.
Gilles Vileneuve became the first future F1 world champion to debut in the series since Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter at the start of the decade. (Note: Fittipaldi doesnt count as he entered after he won his Formula 1 titles.) - Scheckter would return for this season for a one off appearance for McLaren following a successful 2nd place in the 1977 F1 season.
Michelin debuted as a tyre supplier for Renault.
