José Carlos Pace (born October 6th, 1944 in São Paulo, Brazil, died March 18th, 1977 in Mairiporã, São Paulo, Brazil) was a Brazilian racing driver famous for his appearances in Formula One.
Formula One
1976: Tyrrell
Pace joined the Tyrrell team for the 1976 season, but failed to score any points all year - his best finishes being a pair of ninth places in the Soviet Union and France. Despite a fairly consistent 1976, Pace missed out on a drive for 1977, and decided to retire from the sport.
Death
With more time on his hands, Pace turned to his hobby of flying. However, on 18th March, 1977, Pace perished in a light aircraft incident.
The Interlagos Circuit was renamed the Autódromo José Carlos Pace following his death.
