Eugenio Castellotti
Eugenio Castellotti (born 10 October 1930 in Lodi, died 12 May 1957 in Cavriana) was an Italian racing driver. Beginning his racing career at the age of 21, Castellotti quickly became one of the quickest sportscar drivers of the decade, winning the 10 hours of Messina, the Portuguese Grand Prix, the 12 hours of Sebring, the Mille Miglia and the 1000km of the Nürburgring. This success also led to Formula One opportunities, first with Loyer, then the aborted Porsche works project before signing for Gordini in 1956. With them, he proved to be quick, but suffered from unreliability associated with the team. Nonetheless, he scored a podium in the 1956 French Grand Prix.
Castellotti was killed in an accident in the 1957 Mille Miglia. Replacing his injured Ferrari teammate Alfonso de Portago in the race, he crashed in a straight portion roughly 70km away from Brescia, killing himself, codriver Edmund Nelson and nine spectators. Castellotti was only 26 years old. Following this accident, the Mille Miglia was cancelled amid fears surrounding spectator safety.
