The 1988 World Superbike Championship season was the inaugural season of the World Superbike Championship, a new series sanctioned by the FIM to showcase adapted production motorbikes.
Despite american Honda rider Fred Merkel's 9 wins, Australian Bimota Rider Mick Doohan was crowned the first ever world superbike champion, narrowly beating the american by 2 points thanks to slightly better consistency. The Surfers Paradise native impressed so much that, shortly after the season's end, He signed a long-term contract with Honda Racing Corporation to ride a factory NSR500 in the 500cc world championship the following year.
