| − | Born in Monmouth, Davies got his first taste of racing at the age of 6, at a friend's birthday party. Despite not really having any exposure to motor racing prior to this, Davies won the kart race over his friends comfortably. Pleased at the ease of his win, he pestered his parents to take him karting whenever they could; Davies would regularly win, even against people twice his age. Eventually, his parents realised their son's skill and bought him a kart at the age of 13. Within 2 years he had promptly demolished anything even remotely resembling competition in the domestic kart scene, prompting an offer from West Surrey Racing to move to British F3 for 1991.

Despite winning 10 races, though, he missed out on the championship to his rival [[John Zimmer]] by 2 points. Still, he was chosen to move up to F3000 for 1993, competing for Pacific Racing. Davies promptly won the first two rounds, but only scored once more in the season - another win at Spa - in a season where he was on pole and setting fastest lap most of the time. He was passed up for an F1 drive by most major teams for 1994, though Mercedes were interested in both his potential skill and marketability for Britain, resulting in him signing for Sauber in the F1RGP2C.
